Kindergarten room 19 news for the week of 5-18-2015!

In Language Arts, we will be reading the book, “Old MacDonald had a Workshop.” Our center work will relate to this story. Students will work to identify beginning, middle and ending sounds of words, review and build words with short a, identify and use compound words, Compare and contrast items and create a list.

Amazing words-saw, drill, hammer, screwdriver, file, chisel.

High frequency words will be review of those already taught until the end of the year.

Handwriting and phonics lessons will be review of all letters until the end of the year. New handwriting will be to practice writing their phone number and address.

In GO math, the children will work on Chapter 12. This chapter is focused on collecting and analyzing data.  The students will test on this chapter next week. This is the last chapter in our GO math series.

In Religion, we will continue to honor Mary for the month of May. This week we will talk about Jesus’ ascension into Heaven and we will learn about Pentecost as well.

In Language Arts, we will read the book, This Is the Way We Go to School. Students will work to identify and build words with the letter Vv. Students will identify compound words: dogsled, raincoat, mailbox. Students will identify the main idea of a story. Finally, students will create a picture book that shows how people travel.

Amazing Words: cable car, trolley, horse-and-buggy, skis, Metro line,vaporetto.

High Frequency Words: come, where.

Phonics and handwriting lessons will relate to the letters Qq and Yy.

In Go Math we will test on chapter 11 and begin to work in Chapter 12. The focus of Chapter 12 is to classify objects and count the number of objects in each category. Standard addressed in this chapter is CC.K.MD3 Classify objects into given categories, count the number of objects in each category and sort the categories by count.

In religion, we will continue to talk about being kind to one another and trying to make choices that lead us closer to God. We are discussing mothers and we are making projects for our own mothers. We are talking about May being the month to honor mother Mary in special ways.

In Language Arts this week we will be reading the story, On The Move. Our center work will relate to this story. The students will identify and build words with the u sound. They will identify and use words for the days of the week, write a letter and identify and describe story plot. Students will be asked to identify the beginning, middle and end of a story.

Amazing Words-travel, kayak, llama,dogsled, submarine, double-Decker bus.

High Frequency Words-where, come.

Phonics and Handwriting lessons will relate to the letter Vv.

In Go Math, the students will begin chapter 11.  The focus of this chapter is measurement and data. Students will be asked to describe and compare measurable attributes. The learning target for this chapter is representing, relating, and operating on whole numbers initially with sets of objects. Students will be asked to compare length, weight and the heights of various objects. Standards addressed are CC.K.MD1, CC.K.MD.2.

In Religion, we will talk about Jesus being the Good Shepherd. We will continue to discuss the Beatitude of the month, Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice’ sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

This week in Language Arts, we will read the book, The Little Engine That Could. Our Center work will relate to this story. The children will work to identify and build words with the short Uu sound. The children will identify and use words for jobs: pilots, conductor, astronaut, and truck driver. The children will compare by telling how things are alike and contrast by telling how things are different.

Amazing words: engine, tracks, passenger, roundhouse, mountain, valley.

High Frequency words: what, said, was.

The children will write about the earth this week in honor of Earth Day on Wednesday.

Phonics and handwriting lessons will relate to the letter Uu.

In GO math we will work to finish Chapter 10. The focus of this chapter is identifying and describing three-dimensional shapes. In the final lessons for the chapter, the children will be asked to use positional words appropriately. Lessons will target identifying beside, above, below, in front of and behind. The goal is to test for this chapter on Friday.

In religion, we will talk about Jesus returning to his disciples after his Resurrection on Easter. We will talk about the joy that Jesus gives to us all in his promise to always be with us and never leave us. As well as his promise of eternal life; that we can be with him in Heaven forever if we believe and follow his teachings.

Our Beatitude of the month is, Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.

In Language Arts, we will be reading the story, Trucks Roll! Our center work will relate to this story. Students will identify and build words with the x sound. Students will identify and use position words: top, bottom, front, back. Students will be asked to identify the cause and effect in a story. Finally, they will draw a picture to show ways that transportation can help us in an emergency.

Phonics and handwriting lessons will focus on the letter Uu.

In Go Math, we will work on completing chapter 10.  The focus of chapter 10 is to identify and describe Three-dimensional shapes. The students will learn to describe the attributes of spheres, cubes, cylinders and cones. (CC.K. G1, CC.K.G2, CC.K.G3, CC.K.G4)

In religion we will study our new Beatitude for the month of April, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.”

This week we will work on new displays for the hallway. One display will relate to Jesus being our risen savior. The other display will relate to our science studies about different habitats for animals.

In Language Arts this week we will read the story, Mayday!Mayday!. Our center work will relate to this story. Students will work to identify words with the W sound, identify and use words for transportation, tell what is real and what is make-believe and draw different types of transportation.

Last week the students read about traveling to a city and made pictures of skylines. The pictures are part of a new display in our hallway. They turned out great!

Unit 4 assessments concluded last week.

In Go Math, we will begin chapter 10.  The focus of chapter 10 is to identify and describe Three-dimensional shapes. The students will learn to describe the attributes of spheres, cubes, cylinders and cones. (CC.K. G1, CC.K.G2, CC.K.G3, CC.K.G4)

In Religion, we will discuss the holiest time of the Church year and have many lessons related to Holy week and Easter.

There will be no school on Friday, April 3rd, this will mark the start of our Spring break which will run through Sunday, April, 12th. Classes will resume on Monday, April 13th!

In Language Arts, we will be reading the story, Max Takes The Train. Our center work will relate to this story. Students will work to identify words with e sound and build words with the e sound. Students will identify and use words for time: day, week, and month. Students will be asked to identify story setting. Finally, students will be asked to make a picture of a skyline.

Amazing words: plane, jetway, subway, tunnel, ferryboat, sidecar.

High Frequency words: yellow, blue, green.

Unit 4 reading assessments will conclude this week.

In GO math this week the students will take the test for chapter 9 and begin to work on chapter 10. The focus of chapter 10 is to identify and describe Three-dimensional shapes. The students will learn to describe the attributes of spheres, cubes, cylinders and cones. (CC.K. G1, CC.K.G2, CC.K.G3, CC.K.G4)

In religion, we will focus on Palm Sunday and the students will make a special Easter project.

Our new Spring display will be up this week so if you are in the school come and see their work. It is going to be very cheerful. They worked especially hard on their writing for this display.
